Look for opportunities that complement one another between the two campuses. Barnard College considers the residential experience to be an integral part of a student's total education. Students who live on campus have a more productive and more satisfying college experience than those who live off campus. Students who live in campus housing are close to academic buildings, libraries, and dining facilities.
Trained, professional Residential Life & Housing staff members are present to provide social & academic programs and help in emergency situations. Additionally, living on campus provides access to amenities like internet access, laundry rooms, computer labs, music practice rooms, and study lounges. Students are not required to live on campus; however, students are encouraged to live on campus for at least their first year in order to acclimate to the campus and to New York City. 98% of Barnard First-Year students live on campus and over 90% of students overall.
Through an agreement with List College of the Jewish Theological Seminary, located just north of the campus at 122nd Street, students can apply to simultaneously earn a BA degree from Barnard and a BA at JTS. Barnard also offers highly-talented music students the opportunity to apply for the Lesson Exchange Program with Juilliard and/or the Cross Registration Program with the Manhattan School of Music. Both programs will require a separate application and audition. The Lesson Exchange at MSM and Juilliard provide private weekly lessons with faculty. It is important to note that the Exchange does not include participation in large ensembles. Students in the Juilliard program can take classes in instrumental or vocal performance and piano composition.
MSM students can take lessons for instrumental or composition only. Barnard does also offer a multitude of music courses, major, private lessons and many performance opportunities through its own music department and at Columbia. Though Barnard partners with its across-the-street neighbour Columbia, the women's college is a separate institution both legally and financially, with its own admissions process, curriculum, board of trustees, and endowment. Students at Barnard may take courses and participate in athletics and organizations at Columbia , and graduates of Barnard receive a diploma from Columbia University that is signed by the presidents of both institutions. Though Columbia began admitting women in 1983 and wanted to incorporate the women's college into its student body, Barnard maintained its commitment to single-sex education. Barnard was founded in 1889 as Barnard College of Columbia University, and the affiliation has stood strong until the present time.
Barnard is located in an area adjacent to Columbia's campus, with several other academic institutions nearby. Originally, Barnard College was created to become a women's school during the time when Columbia and other Ivy League Schools were only accepting male students. By the turn of the century, women in Barnard were allowed to attend classes in the University of Columbia, including classes in political science, philosophy and science. Barnard is only the second woman's college that I have visited. If I were to compare the two, I would say that both schools take very similar approaches to developing women not only for careers and further education, but also for leadership.
Both communities have the right examples of women as leaders within their administrations, their faculty and their student bodies. They also do an excellent job at preparing women for careers in the sciences. Both practice need-blind admissions and will attempt to meet a student's full financial need.
Located just across the street from Columbia University, Barnard College shares its resources with Columbia. It is also part of the Seven Sisters, which are made up of historically women's colleges. These seven schools, which are highly selective liberal arts colleges in the Northeastern United States, are created to provide women with the same academic rigor as the Ivy League. Simply put, Barnard is institutionally independent, while academically and socially linked to Columbia. There are few freebies between the school- Barnard has to pay Columbia for access to utilities, the libraries, and other facilities such as Lerner.
Columbia University does not handle admissions for Barnard, nor does it spend money on or collect money from Barnard students. The same goes for Barnard College and Columbia students. Nevertheless, both student bodies typically benefit in some manner when either school spends money, as the schools tend to keep student programming open to all undergraduates, though this is not always the case.
Founded in 1889 as a college for women closely affiliated with the then all-male Columbia University, Barnard College is a self-sustaining entity under the Columbia umbrella. The Music Major of Barnard College provides both a core of foundational studies and an opportunity to specialize in one of the areas of music such as composition, computer music studies, ethnomusicology, music history, or music theory. The Major, which is taught in conjunction with the Department of Music of Columbia University, is designed to take its place within Barnard's liberal arts program. Its purpose is to give the student the experience of doing sustained and advanced work, including the possibility of independent research, within the field of music.
Luckily, unlike some Seven Sisters schools and other all-women liberal arts colleges in the country, students at Barnard are not required to live on-campus. This means that they can deduct $15,691 from the sticker price if they wish to live elsewhere, bringing the total cost from $76,279 down to $60,588. Because of the intensity of the thesis process in the Ethnomusicology track, it is not well suited for students who struggle with writing or who are not drawn to academic research or wish to focus on music performance in their studies. It isespeciallysuited to students who are considering going on to graduate study in ethnomusicology (or related fields such as anthropology, library science, or popular cultural/media studies), as have many of the program's alumnae. A unique aspect of studying in Barnard is being affiliated with several elite colleges and universities, particularly Columbia.
The University of Columbia and Barnard College have a partnership agreement that allows students to use the same residence halls, obtain access to all the library and facility resources that each school offers. Students from both schools compete in the Columbia-Barnard Athletic Consortium. Students of Barnard are given the diploma of the University, which has the signature of both Barnard's president and that of the University president.
Ariana González Stokas joined Barnard College in July 2019 as inaugural Vice President of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. She earned her Ph.D. in philosophy and education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Her doctoral research examined the intersections of aesthetics, education, and inequality. Prior to Barnard, González Stokas served as the inaugural Dean of Inclusive Excellence at Bard College in New York. While there she was instrumental in identifying working groups to establish a clear and strategic vision for Pell-eligible and DACA students.
Prior to her role at Bard, she was an assistant professor of interdisciplinary studies at Guttman Community College of the City University of New York , where she was a founding faculty member. González Stokas brings a wealth of experience to Barnard as a committed educator and researcher. She has worked as an administrator, faculty member, and scholar of philosophy and education, with a proven track record of being dedicated to equity and access. Barnard College is a private women's college with an acceptance rate of 11.8%.

Many of us applied to Barnard for specific advantages that could not be offered to us by the other 3 colleges of Columbia University. Personally, I applied to Barnard because unlike Columbia College, you are constantly surrounded by an empowered community of females, and learn through the '9 Ways of Knowing' and not the 'Core Curriculum'.
I also know many girls who were accepted into both Columbia College and Barnard, but ultimately chose Barnard. It is not the backdoor to Columbia, as people like you may believe. This year, the acceptance rate for Barnard was only slightly higher than Columbia College/SEAS at 10.8%. So although we are not Columbia College students, Barnard students are intrinsically Columbia University students.
Besides people who actively protest against the Barnard-Columbia relationship are probably just really bitter for no reason or got rejected from either institution. From talking to current Barnard students, almost no one cares which undergraduate college you study at once you're actually on campus. From 1955 onwards, Columbia and Barnard students could cross-register for courses offered by the other school. In 1983, the original undergraduate school of the university, Columbia College, became co-educational after Barnard refused to merge with Columbia the way Radcliffe College did with Harvard University. Every fifteen years, the University of Columbia and Barnard college renegotiate their interoperate relationship.
School Information Founded in 1889, Barnard was the only college in New York City, and one of the few in the nation, where women could receive the same rigorous and challenging education available to men. The College was named after educator, mathematician, and 10th president of Columbia College Frederick A.P. Barnard, who argued unsuccessfully for the admission of women to Columbia University. The school's founding, however, was largely due to the rallying efforts of Annie Nathan Meyer, a student and writer who was equally dissatisfied with Columbia's stance and staunchly committed to the education of women. She joined forces with a small group of her peers to petition the University Trustees for an affiliated self-sustaining liberal arts women's college, and in two years accomplished what she had set out to do. Barnard College has a highly competitive admissions pool with a low acceptance rate and high average SAT/ACT scores.
However, Barnard has aholistic admissions process involving other factors beyond your grades and test scores. Astrong application essay, short answer essay, andglowing letters of recommendationcan strengthen your application, as can participation in meaningfulextracurricular activitiesand arigorous course schedule. Students with particularly compelling stories or achievements can still receive serious consideration even if their test scores are outside of Barnard's range.

The plus side of Columbia's approach is that the rigor of the curriculum has been proven–it is more than 150 years old–and widely respected by employers as well as graduate and professional schools.
Columbia graduates, admittedly based on the small number I know, truly know how to think, and this Core builds critical thinking skills. During my time at Barnard College I learned that students who apply to that school also considered Columbia more than any other college. Students who chose Barnard were not necessarily considering a women's college. They were more likely to consider another research university that is located in or near a very large city.
